Steamtunnels Facebook About Us Page Circa 1999

Below is from the Steamtunnels ‘About Us’ page content circa 1999 from the ‘Way Back Machine’ at Archive.org.

Facebook
Let’s face it, the Facebook is an integral part of Stanford’s social structure: you poured over it freshman year getting to know your class and now it remains a desktop reference more cherished and abused than your Webster’s Dictionary. But in all its glory, the Facebook is constrained by the archaic medium in which it resides. Who wants to be remembered as a low-resolution, black and white, and often unflattering picture of when you were a squirrelly high schooler? Worse, who wants to go down in facebook history as Greg or Marsha Brady, a Cubist Abstract, the Thinker, or the Tree? So, as the Steamtunnels’s first service to Stanford students, we put the Facebook online. We give you control of your picture, and we provide intelligent searches of the entire student population. You can search for students by first name, last name, first and last name, nicknames, and even browse alphabetically by Facebook year. You can update or remove your picture whenever you like and you’ll be happy to know we’ve restricted Internet access to Stanford users only (Joe Web Surfer from Seattle is not able to view all our pretty faces).
